One big reason I love this country because it is home country of my beautiful Vietnamese fiancée who is my father’s secretary. We are going to get marriage in spring next year. We have many hobbies which can share together; one of these is travelling. We have had some trips to visit attractions in South, Central and North Viet Nam.

I am writing about my experience travelling by night train from Ha Noi to Lao Cai which is not favorite transportation in Viet Nam with foreigners but it bought me the most realistic feeling of a Vietnamese pack-backer.

It was trip in Reunification and International labor holidays from April 30th to 5nd 2015, our group 6 people decided to climb up to Fanxipan, which is the highest mountain in Indochina. To save money, we bought the lowest-class tickets.

There are some trains with same route but different quality. Some luxury trains are for high-income passenger such as Victory, Fanxipan Express, Livitrans but some is for lower living-standard domestic travelers, exp: LC1 train. One member in our group who was born in a middle class family, he suggested us to try this train at least one time since it would give us pictures that had not been ever seen before. And I definitely agreed with this, I had different experience.

The train started journey at 21:00 from Hanoi Train Station. When I stepped up the train, I was shocked with the facilities on the train. Since it is for mostly low-income people traveling with cheap fare, it provides most basically needs: two seat wooden benches, lights, fans, and of course, no air conditioner. One of interesting truth only available on this train is that the Railway Company sells ticket for the last minute passenger when all the benches are filled, these passengers must seat on plastic chair placed at the aisle. For a long trip from Hanoi to Lao Cai, it is too inconvenient and not many people use it. But with some urgent cases, people buy this ticket and then ask others who are already on the bench to allow them to sit together “for a while”. You at first think that it’s just simple “for a while”, but actually it means you’ll share your seat for a whole trip. This is Vietnamese character: nice, helpful and easy going.

Since it was the first time I tried this transportation, I could not sleep well because of noise and uncomfortable feeling. My eye was still opening when the train passed Yen Vien Station. The door opened when a chubby 5 year old boy stepped in the train with his father. When they were finding their seats, I called him and share him the bench with us. He was such a cute, clever little guy. When my friends talked with his father and knew that they was back home for long holidays and they still felt happy when got the tickets at the last minutes of departure.

At midnight, the noise was decreased. People stopped chatting, light was out, most of traveler were sank in their sleeps. Sometimes, some cigarette addicts left their seats, moved to the corridor next to the smelly restroom. Staffs pushed cart with some snacks along cabin, call louder in order to sell something to passengers.

Luckily I am a strong man and I could continue toward to Fanxipan with a sleepless night.

At the height of 1600 meters above sea level, Sapa town itself hides the beauty of a young woman under white clouds really captivates all visitors.

In the spring, the entire town of Sa Pa is covered with the bright and colorful cherry blossoms. Wandering in Sa Pa town, listening to the praise of the guys at the Love Fair, or enjoying the special dishes in highland, or sipping into warm drinks. Coming to European Garden at Ham Rong, the port panoramic beautiful sky town, you can watch over Fansipan peak, Bamboo forest, Ta Phin action, Sa Pa ancient rock, etc. You’ll actually feel relaxing, comfortable and fall in love with this land.

Summer comes when the farm branches are fruits filled with peachs, pears, plums. And it would be great fun and fabulous when visitors admire the white foam Silver Falls, or to Cat Cat Village, meet the village people, hear the gurgling stream and feel the cool and clear stream of cheers. Forget the heat of summer, visitors go to Ta Phin cave to admire the beauty of creation. Especially in the center of Sa Pa, there are more than 200 Western-style villas and ancient church, located between the forests and groves samu flowers. This makes you feel like living in an European city.

In the Fall, Sa Pa becomes more attractive when wearing his yellow shirt of terraces, green stretches of undulating hills. You can easily see visitors in the fall, many photographers have gathered here in the hope of capturing the best moments of the day to share with friends, or couples, newly wed couples also choose this time to honeymoon.

The winter in Sa Pa is like miniature European city. Dense fog remind tourists feel like foggy England. Watching the smoke from the kitchen of the people in the white color of the snow falling on cold, the beauty of Russian peace. Elsewhere, mountain flowers still shine, such as the emphasis in winter white, medium mystery, just as France exquisite.

With the fresh beauty of four seasons, Sa Pa is always the most interesting and attractive to those who love highlands, to conquer Fansipan peak, to explore the mysterious cave, to discover subculture Dao, Thai, H’mong …, or simply to relax and socialize with friends. Sa Pa is the ideal place for Viet Nam domestic and foreign tourists.

Location

Sapa market is located right at the heart of Sapa town, just a short walk to Sapa stone church that is built by the French in the early 20th century.

What to buy

The market consists of both indoors and outdoors space. While stalls along the stone stairs outside sell flowers, fresh produce, groceries and food; little workshops on the second floor offer ethnic fabrics.

Once getting inside the market gate, tourists will see stalls full of mountain fruits like peach, apricot, pear and plum. Buying some fruits for the dinner dessert or enjoy during the trip is a good idea. Dropping by the right hand side stalls, tourists will find trinkets (ethnic silver jewelry), medical herbs and local products that are good for health like forest honey, notosingeng and ganoderma.

For the ones who are enchanted by colorful costume of H’Mong, Dao people in Sapa, and looking for authentic ethnic fabric, the second floor of Sapa market is a must-visit. Here, one can find a number of embroidered skirts, handbags, blankets, pillow shams and table covers with unique patterns, made by the indigenous. Ethnic women who sell brocades here can converse quite well in English.

What to eat

Visiting Sapa market in the morning, travelers will see a lot of local people gather at food stalls to enjoy favorite breakfast of “mèn mén” (steamed corn wheat), “th?ng c?” (horse soup) and corn wine. These are traditional food and beverage of local people in Sapa, and must-try for any tourists who come here.

When to visit

As a weekly market, Sapa market only opens on Sunday. Hence, tourists should wake up early on Sunday morning to visit the market and enjoy hearty breakfast with the locals.

It only takes tourists staying in Sapa town few walking minutes to get Sapa market, which is located right in the heart of the town, nearby Sapa church.
